In 2011 I drove three thousand miles from Delaware to Johnson Valley California to watch the King of the Hammers Ultra 4 Off Road Race. While I was there I shot a lot of photos. Some of the photos ended up on the first page of Google. About a month prior to KOH 2012 I got a phone call from one of the event coordinators and she told me if I wanted to take photos again this year I would have to get media credentials. WTF? I don’t sell the photos, I’m not working for anybody, I don’t make a dime shooting the photos and I was always well behind the crowd control lines with other spectators while I was taking the photos. Mine just happened to be better than most other spectator photos so I get singled out? So I look into it and to get media credentials I have to buy event insurance, get a BLM vendor permit & sign my life away to the KOH producers all at a cost of around $800.00
So, do I stay behind the crowd control lines and shoot similar photos to the ones I took last year or do I cough up the $800 and get my Media Credentials and go behind the lines for better shots in 2012? With my pocket book $800 lighter and a reflective yellow vest I will now be granted all access to the King of the Hammers race course. Hopefully this year I can locate some buyers for some of these photos to recoup the $2500 I just put into new camera equipment, the $800 for Media Credentials, the $3500 I spent on a dual purpose bike and the nearly $2000 I’ll spend in gas driving the 6000 mile round trip from Delaware to CA and back to DE

So what is Media Offroad? I guess I’m a media company now and I just went from Amateur Photographer to Pro since I have now have to pay to take pictures.
